I was on the show probably around 1986 performing in a Sheila E. lip sync act. How we got started? Well...
Actually I have a cousin who was a Prince impersonator at the time who kind of kicked things off. He would get hired to do his impersonation thing and because I'm a musician, he would borrow my guitars for his act.
My cousin, ever the big thinker, decided why not impersonate Prince's whole band. Then, why not have a Sheila E. act as well. My mom made the costumes, I provided the instruments and we'd actually perform at clubs, etc.
Around 1986 Puttin' On The Hits held auditions, I believe, at a mall in Pasadena, CA. We tried out with our Sheila E. band, now dubbed "Goldie Foxx and the Holly Rock Band," and managed to snag a spot on the show.
I'm fuzzy on actually taping the show. I remember losing! lol I think we at least came in 2nd place. I also think I remember one of the judges being singer Marilyn McCoo.
Now that I think about it Puttin' On The Hits was like the original American Idol without the talent lol. Okay, well you at least had to have some performance ability, even without the singing.
What I do now? Not long after appearing on the show, our lip sync "band" broke up. I didn't mind, I wanted to pursue music in the non pretending to play sense.
I currently work for artist Ernie Barnes who's work should be familiar with TV viewers everywhere (his artwork was used on the TV show "Good Times").
I still play music in the Los Angeles area. I was the bass player for the band The Lula Stream and am currently playing for singer-songwriter Cyndi Vellmure.
Interesting tidbit: Three of the members of Goldie Foxx and the Holly Rock Band are actual relatives of Sheila E. (I'm not one of them)
